The first habitants of this section of the coast were the Guringai Aboriginal tribe who named the area Kincumba meaning ‘towards the rising sun' (later known as Kincumber). You'll realise how apt this name is each morning as you enjoy the sun dancing on the bay. You can still see the signs of the Guringai people today through their rock carvings on Kincumba Mountain.
Around 1830, the first European settlers were attracted here by the timber forests and the area soon developed an envied reputation for its boat and shipbuilding.
In 1847 James Dunlop settled at Boora Boora on the property where Figtree Bay is located today. His original farmhouse, which at one time was used as the Kincumber post office stood on the same site as the current cottage built around 1908. This heritage-listed building is still owned by one of James Dunlop's descendants and marks the heart of Figtree Bay, maintaining a tangible link to the region's uniquely Australian past.
